Robert Scoble replies

Robert Scoble has replied to my post about the current spat between him and Andrew Orlowski of The Register.

However, I don't think he has read my post clearly enough. I start off by saying "The email, if proved to be true..." and later say "If this email proves to be true..." and then "Not in this case, it seems...". I think I've given Robert Scoble the benefit of the doubt sufficient times.

I also say "The Register, like every other mainstream media from the BBC
to The Sunday Times, sometimes gets it wrong
". Once again giving Robert Scoble the benefit of the doubt.

The facts are that there are currently two contradictory positions. You
have to make a judgement call on which, if either, to believe. The
Register is a long-standing web-based IT magazine that has been
publishing for many years. Robert Scoble might be an 'A-List' blogger
but he is still a relatively junior employee of Microsoft, a large
global corporation with a reputation for abusing its powerful position
(fact - court rulings say so).

On the balance of probability, based on the respective reputations of
both sides then I am more likely to believe The Register. It might be
wrong. I might be wrong. And will apologise when, and if, I am in a
position to know the truth.

Of course the media can get it wrong. The most famous recent case being
the infamous Hutton Report which showed the BBC to be guilty of sloppy
journalism and misrepresenting the Government of the UK.

We shall wait and see.

Lots of comment on Scoble v. Orlowski

IT journalist Ian Betteridge notes
that most bloggers are backing Scoble. I'm obviously in a minority, but
Betteridge makes some different points about why he doesn't entirely
buy Scoble's line.

Robert Scoble has also commented on Betteridge's blog and goes as far
as naming a "source" of the email. I don't know if the person named was
the source and really do hope that Robert checked with him first to see
if he could name him publicly.

Whatever the truth of the matter I think Robert Scoble needs to think
more carefully about his tone. One of the reasons I am more likely to
believe The Register is that Robert's angry, belligerent tone in both
his blog posts and comments on other blogs, make me think that he has
something to hide.

Every second a blog - but not for the long slog

The Technorati research into the growth of blogs gets print coverage
on the front page of today's Guardian. The Guardian has always been
ahead of the curve in its coverage of blogs but it is still significant
they report this story on the front page (even if it is below the fold
and August).

Fair and balanced media coverage?

Guy Clapperton: About these bombs... makes some pertinent points about the disturbing nature of a lot of the media coverage about the capture of the alleged bombers.

Map breaking news on Google Earth

Wow, this is the first use of Google Earth that has made me go wow. Daden Consulting: NewsGlobe uses RSS news feeds to present stories on a local, regional or international map. And it's free.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee says blogs are it

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the world's first website, has said
blogging is closer to his original idea about a read/write web.
