Audio press releasess

PR Week's diary column reports that International Public Relations
Partners is claiming to be the first PR consultancy to offer audio
press releases.

"Most journalists have problems absorbing the volume of written news
via mail, fax and the internet - so now they can listen to a press
release and decide it it is worth following up," explains IPRP's
managing director.

PR Week points out that this earth shattering news was delivered via a written press release.

Thinking that this might be attempt to find another use for podcasts I took a quick look at IPRP's website (warning it is very Flash intensive). But no, not even a copy of the original news release.

In my humble opinion the idea is just plain daft. Listening to just one
'audio press release' would take far longer than scanning dozens of
paper, fax, email and RSS releases.

To prove my point this is what journalist David Tebbutt had to say about podcasts. I wonder how he would react to receiving an audio press release?

I wouldn't subscribe to the pesky things. (Assuming the PR company has heard of RSS). If they tried to send an MP3, I'd delete it rather than download it.
Do these people realise how we handle press releases? Most are despatched within a second. (We're talking 94 percent of press releases received by me and Martin Banks in a three month period some years ago.) Of the remaining six percent 90 percent of those were dumped before we reached the end of the first paragraph.
Imagine the hassle of trying to handle audio releases.
Forget it.

I guess the management at IPPR has yet to come across the concept of the audio news release (ANR) or video news release (VNR) that has become the top concern of media watchdogs over the pond. There is a big hoo-hah over this 'fake news' in the US because local radio and TV stations are running the material without any further editing: they are bit different to your regular printed press release as they turn up as complete packages that are ready to air (just as long as you don't mind them having a pretty heavy spin). Check out www.sourcewatch.org for a campaign against them.
However, I guess the breakthrough claimed by IPPR is just someone reading out the text of a printed release. I did wonder (for about five seconds) whether they might go to the trouble of getting the CEO to read out the quote someone in marketing dreamt up for him/her (not that this ever happens of course).
You won't catch me listening to one for the same reasons as you and David have already cited. I don't mind having a gander at the transcript for a couple of seconds at least.
