Public unaware of RSS

The Register reports a Nielson/Netrarings' survey that says 66% of blog readers do not understand RSS. Big surprise, not. That's exactly why I'm going to change mine to read Web Feeds like The Guardian. Although it appears Lee Hopkins and Stephen Davies both read my post and have already gone ahead and done it!

Gmail finally launches

Gmail finally launches... well actually no. Only if you have a USA mobile phone. Still every Gmail user I know has dozens of invites left. Just ask me if you need one.

I am not alone in doubting Google

Scripting News: 8/24/2005

It seems that I'm not the only one not buying the Google Talk hype as Dave Winer says: "Big Yawn! Why should anyone care?"

Blog in haste, repent at leisure

Thanks to this BBC NEWS | Technology | Google sets tongues wagging with Talk I've just realised that Google Talk is based on Jabber. This means that we will eventually see it working with other protocols (and that I should be able to get it to work in Miranda IM).

But IM is still way to geeky. Until anyone can talk to anyone, like the phone or email, then it ain't going to work for most people I know in 'real life'. Then we can just on with choosing which client we like, just the same as we can choose our email client or mobile phone.

Gmail invites

Forgot to say that if you really want to use Google Talk and you don't have Gmail then I've still got lots of invites available. Just ask via comment or email.

Google Talk

As I said on Monday Google has gone ahead and launched its Google Talk service. My first response is why? What's the point. Do Google expect people to sign up out of sheer loyalty to all things Google?

At the moment it is invite only as you need a Gmail address, all of which makes it even more pointless. Why would you want to run an IM program that only allows you to talk to a very small sub-set of your contacts?

In the early days of SMS it didn't take off because competing phone companies couldn't talk to each other. It exploded when we had a standard that everyone could use. IM is in the same boat.

Google Talk looks neat. A clean, simple interface with low system overheads. Until I have to run it alongside Skype, AIM, MSN, Yahoo. I have contacts on each. Hopefully there will soon be a Miranda IM plug-in for Google Talk.

Influencers use RSS

Nooked Blog: Nooked - Influencer survey

Interesting to see that I don't fall into any of the most common Nooked categories. I use Onfolio as my RSS reader. I used to use Feedreader which was fine and free. I then tried FeedDemon which is the best of bunch but not good enough to justify the money to register it. Onfolio might not be quite as good as an RSS reader but it offers a lot more on top.
