Google Instant Messaging?

Does the New York Times have a lead on Google's rumoured introduction of instant messaging with news of a "communications tool" launch this Wednesday?

My first thought is do we need yet another IM standard? My contacts are spread across every IM standard going (MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Skype) , so I use the open source Miranda IM client (I used to use Trillian but it doesn't have a plug-in for Skype).

RSS 3.0 specs up for review

You can see the proposed new specs for RSS 3.0 here.

I'm of the view that we do need a simpler name and Microsoft's web feed idea is probably going to be it. All this RSS, Atom, XML nonsense just makes it way too hard for most people to get to grips with something they quite like when they get a chance to actually use it.

Map breaking news on Google Earth

Wow, this is the first use of Google Earth that has made me go wow. Daden Consulting: NewsGlobe uses RSS news feeds to present stories on a local, regional or international map. And it's free.

Paper phone books are still needed

Loic Le Meur chides France Telecom for still delivering paper telephone books as he thinks that people "prefer their DSL line".

I disagree. I still need my paper phone book, or rather Yellow Pages. The internet is fine for looking for and buying some services. But not for everything. If you want to find a local plumber, electrician, mechanic etc then the paper Yellow Pages wins hands down.

Most of those people don't have websites but they do advertise in the Yellow Pages. This gives me a clue to what they are about before I phone them. I know if they are members of their trade association (which gives me some reassurance that I won't be ripped off.)

All I would find for most of them on Yell.com is a simple listing with their phone number.

SilverSurfers today

Today is Silver Surfers Day, a great initiative to bridge the digital divide and get more older people (which they define as over 50, rather low in my humble opinion).
